2022 Theme: What’s underneath
Amber Cayley
First Place | Year 10
“This picture shows the underside of a rock ledge on the Rockhoppers walk from Back Beach to Oakura Beach. It depicts the theme ‘What’s underneath?’ as it shows a whole microorganism hidden beneath rock. When you first look you see a normal rock ledge but when you delve deeper you come face to face with a whole other world of dripping algae. It mesmerised me as you never know what is truly underneath unless you are curious enough to find out.”

Second Place | Year 10
“I chose Kiwi Fruit because of It’s fascinating textures and colours. How I took the photos is I got a piece of window glass and placed it on the top of the back of the chairs, I cut the Kiwi Fruit into slices, once I placed the Kiwi Fruit how I liked I layed down on the ground underneath the glass looking up at the Kiwi Fruit.”

Third Place | Year 10
“This image showcases two neighbouring glow worms fishing for moths underneath a dirt cliff overhang in Pukekura Park. The bioluminescence of the worms comes from an organ just underneath their skin. The glow is caused by an enzyme reacting to other chemicals within the worm.
This image was taken with a Fujifilm XT-3 and Fuji 100-400mm lens”
Sophia Thompson
Third Place | Year 11-13
“I took this photo using my ipad mini 4. The cliff-face borders the Waiaua River, Opunake. The layers of rock and soil caught my eye because of the scientific and cultural symbolism of history and time they represent to me. The photo reminded me that there is so much we don’t “see” unless we look beyond the surface to discover what’s underneath.”
